If you are like most people, you are plagued with thoughts day and night that are disempowering. You talk to yourself in ways you wouldn’t tolerate from anybody else.
This negative self talk does more than just make you feel bad; you often get “talked out of” the very things you really want to do (“I don’t have to go to the gym today, I’ll go tomorrow.”, “I can have dessert. I was good all day.” Sound familiar?)
Consider that these “thoughts” are not you thinking. They are just neural-patterns that your brain developed as a survival mechanism. Much in the same way you don’t beat your heart or control your breathing (your brain does that), your brain has thoughts. These thoughts are all past-based and are habitual. If you don’t believe me, stop thinking. Right now. Stop thinking. If you were doing it, you could stop it. But notice that you can’t. You are not even required for thinking to occur. Your brain does that for you.
Once you become aware of this, especially within the realm of EMS Leadership, that’s when the magic happens. You can start to create new thoughts and develop new neural pathways in your brain. Just like any habit, all it takes is practice to become proficient at it.
Here’s a really great video from a guy who could’ve chosen negative self-talk and I don’t think anyone would have blamed him. This inspiring and thought provoking video is only 10:26 minutes long and I promise you it is well worth the time.
Wishing you all the best,
